Client: American Biltrite Corporation
Location: Moorestown, New Jersey
Background: American Biltrite added a new high speed production line to their existing plant. A new thermal oxidizer was needed to meet stringent New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) air emission requirements.
Problem: The new production line was sized for twice the capacity of the existing lines. The customer wanted a system with the lowest operating cost while meeting air emission requirements. Over 1,650 pounds per hour of solvents were to be released from the new production line. Heptane and toluene were the most significant Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAP’s) in the process emissions.
Solution: Air Clear engineers designed, fabricated and installed a three-can Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) with purge feature to meet the stringent New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection air emission regulations. NJDEP requires greater than 99% destruction removal efficiency (DRE) for this oxidizer. It successfully passed emissions test at 99.6%!
The system operates with no fuel consumption at full design solvent loading. In addition, a continuous emissions monitoring system (CEM), continuously monitors oxygen, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons in the stack emissions. The system operates at >99% DRE with less than 10 ppm hydrocarbons and less than 5 ppm CO in the stack emissions.
The system is a three-can design, with air purge. This feature allows Air Clear to meet greater than 99% DRE. In addition, the pressure drop of the system is less than 5” water column (w.c.) at full design flow. This, combined with a variable frequency drive, minimizes electrical consumption. A programmable logic controller (PLC) system was used to provide flexible, easy, remote operation of the entire system.
