Recycled Asphalt Products (RAP) Emissions Control Utilizing The Air Clear Coalescing Fiberbed Filter Mist Collector Systems
Client: Green Asphalt
Location: Long Island City, NY
Background: RAP is the term given to removed and/or processed materials containing asphalt and aggregates. These materials are generated when used asphalt pavements (Black Top) are removed for construction road resurfacing. When properly crushed, screened, and reprocessed, RAP consists of high-quality, well-graded aggregates coated by asphalt cement.
RAP makes both environmental and economic sense. RAP constitutes a “treasure trove” of pre-processed road-building materials. The use of RAP has grown widely, reducing the use of virgin materials and helping to preserve landfill space. Highway agencies and taxpayers benefit because recycling stretches tax dollars, allowing more roads to be kept in better condition.
Problem: The process which converts the old bituminous concrete generates both visible fume and solid particulate emissions which cannot be released to the atmosphere.
Solution: Air Clear designed, manufactured and installed a 45,000 ACFM Coalescing Fiberbed Filter Mist Collector (FB) with an indexing pre-filter on a Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP) Product Line. The FB System is designed to capture, collect, and remove sub-micron particles “smoke” from process exhaust streams. The unit has been operating successfully for four (4) years.
By providing an efficient cost effective solution for controlling the emission generated during the recycling process Air Clear hopes to aid in expanding this green technology across the country!
